“I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack ... After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion ... I use a water activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub. And on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine ... Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.”
As much as we all love the original American Psycho - Patrick Bateman - ninety-nine per cent of guys like us can’t even fathom doing this day-in, day-out. Who has the time? Yet, one thing in the film’s opening monologue is deadly true … “I believe in taking care of myself” ... and so should you.
But looking after your ‘animal’ shouldn’t be a chore. Instead, it should be baby simple. And let’s be real, the last thing you want is a “ritual” or a 37-step process followed by the daily game of finding matching socks. Instead, what you need is quick and easy time-tested tips that work. Not to worry, I’ve got your back here.
I’ve put together four things you can start doing that elevate your skin care game. Best of all it won't cost you all the time in the world. Let’s dive in.
Cleanse. First, let us pause. You don’t need to cleanse your face twice daily. Yes, you can finally unburden yourself from this 30-second activity. Rather, rinsing your face with lukewarm water each morning is more than enough. But you do need to cleanse, and the best time to use a facial cleaner is during your nightly shower. Because you can wash away dirt, grime and dead skin cells which have piled up throughout the day. With the myriad of cleanser options available pick one that suits your skin type—normal, oil, combination. One last piece of advice, don't cheap out on cleansers, because with cleansers you really do get what you pay for.
Once-a-week scrub. Forget the charcoal-infused facial masks or canvassing your mug with cucumbers. To give your skin an extra deep scrub, at most all you’ll need is a once-a-week exfoliator. Gentle, yet deep cleaning, a good exfoliator hoovers dirt and grime from pores while flushing out dead skin cells and debris.
(If you work in outdoors or in environments which beat down on your skin, a twice weekly exfoliator may be your best option to keep skin rejuvenated.)
Sleep your way to better skin. There’s no better time of the day to let skin soak up much needed nutrients then when you’re about to hit the hay. Thankfully, us blokes only need a night serum or light moisturiser to keep skin from drying out and slow down he ageing process. Best of all, because you’re away from the elements and UV, you can store away heavy moisturisers. Instead, opt for a moisturiser which contains Vitamin C/E, retinoids, or topical peptides.
Hydrate and protect. The final thing you need to do each day before stepping out the door is to protect from the sun and moisturise. UV rays continually punish the top layer of skin, which means faster ageing, but you can reverse this trend by using a moisturiser and SPF in one. The benefits are two-fold here: First, you stop skin from drying out. And second, the SPF protects against age-accelerating UV.
And the experts agree.
A 2012 study by the American Society for Clinical Investigation discovered you can reduce fine lines by as much as 20% by applying moisturiser daily. Not a bad way to slow down the ageing process with something which takes less than 60 seconds to apply each morning, right?
By following the steps above you may be able to short cut your way to healthier more youthful looking skin in just a few minutes a day.
